Poisonous Weeds Essay -- Plants Poison Nature Essays Papers
Poisonous Weeds From the book Common Poisonous Plants and Mushroom of North America by Nancy J. Turner and Adam F. Szczawinski comes a very interesting story. ââ¬Å"In April 1980, a five-year-old child was fatally poisoned in Victoria, British Columbia from eating Poison Hemlock while at play with her sisters. Her babysitter was not even aware that she had eaten the plant. The little girl felt sick and would not eat. She laid down, and within an hour fell into a deep coma. It was only at this point that her sisters recalled that earlier she had eaten a plant. She was rushed to the hospital, but despite all efforts to save her life, she died six days laterâ⬠(Szczawinski, Turner, xi). Poison Hemlock is just one of the thousands of plants that are poisonous to humans as well as animals. In addition, the plants Jimsonweed and Deadly Nightshade can also have extremely harmful effects on humans. All three of these poisonous plants can turn up anywhere from hiking trails to backyards to fie lds, so therefore it is important to be able to identify them and understand how deadly they potentially can be. In order to prevent what happened in the story at the beginning, letââ¬â¢s look more closely at Poison Hemlock (Conium Maculatum). When mature, this carrot-like plant can get up to six feet or greater in height with triangular, fern-like leaves (Szczawinski, Turner, 129). The plant possesses white flowers, which are grouped in numerous umbrella-like clusters. Small, grayish brown, and flat with five curvy ridges running lengthwise describe the fruit of Poison Hemlock. However, beware of ever crushing or even touching this plant because a strong mouse odor will be emitted. Modelling a Database for a Garment Manufacturing Company Essay
This project will contain information on the processing involved in modelling a database for a Garment Manufacturing company. It will also document how to create letter and fax templates that make the work more efficient. The database will hold details about the suppliers, customers and stock etc. The garment style, size, how many ordered and deadline dates for the garments to be finished will also be data which is stored in the table. The end-user Mr Jordan will be able to recall information on any of his suppliers or customers. He will be able to link what the customer orders to what he has to order from his suppliers or if the customers provides their own supplies he will see the amount needed. Mr Jordan will be able to send letters automatically to his customers and suppliers about work and orders. The database will be developed using Microsoft Access, the supplier and customer letters will be created in Microsoft Word and merged with data from Microsoft Access. Background to Org anisation The Garment Manufacturing Company is called Air Ltd, it is located in Stratford and is owned by Mr Jordan. There are nine workers, which Mr Jordan is in charge of. He takes care of every aspect of the business himself apart from parts of the accounts. All of the other nine workers are arrange in a production line around the work place. Mr Jordan deals with the customer enquiries, orders and suppliers etc. At the moment letters are created from scratch in Microsoft Word. Information Technology is not used much as it could be at the present time. Current procedures Customers get into contact with the company and talk about their order and the type of work required to meet their needs. This would include the design styles, materials and number of garments etc. Either the customer provide their own materials or they set out their order to Mr Jordan so he can go to his supplier. The company then makes a sample garment which is shown to the customer if they are pleased with it then production starts, if not then amendments are made. At the moment if letters need to be sent out to customers or suppliers they are created individually instead of making a template and using mail-merge. From customer orders Mr Jordan notes down how many garments to be made, style of garment and size on paper, all of this documentation is kept in a folder. Image of Mr Jordanââ¬â¢s customers order detail sheet. [image002.jpg] The customer detail sheet is in tabular form where records are filled in about each of the individual garments. For example data such as size, colour and style etc. would be held on the sheet. Mr Jordan takes care of all of these sheets in a folder. When they are out dated and are no, longer of any use they are disposed of. Strengths of the current system The strengths of the following system are: All of the workers are used to the current system this means that nobody has to be trained to use any new equipment. For example none of the workers have to be trained on how to use computers. Most work is carried out by hand, this is a strength because if machines were used and any one of them broke down the production of the garments would have to be stopped. Weaknesses of the current system The weaknesses of the current system are: All documentation is carried out on paper. All letter to customers are created individually. The business does not use e-mail to communicate with its customers or suppliers. The business does not have a web site advertising its service and goods. If vital business documents are lost, there is no backup. There is no form of a factory outlet. Objectives for the new system Store details about the customers permanently. Store details about the suppliers permanently. Easily be able to input data concerning the ordering of materials. For example, style, material, size, colour etc. Be able to print out order details for the worker to use. Check his status with the suppliers. For example, material ordered etc. Send out letters to customers using mail merge for better efficiency. Print out an update of all deadlines to be met. End-user and functional requirements Store details about the customers permanently The database will need to store details of the name of the company, its address and the telephone number. The user will sometimes want to display details of all the customers. It will be useful if the customer company names are in alphabetical order. The user might want to send the customers letters which means that the postcode will have to be stored in a separate field. Store details about the suppliers permanently The database will store details about the suppliers. For example the user will sometimes want to list the names in alphabetical order this means that the first name will have to be stored in a separate field to the middle and last name. If the user wants to send the customers letters to inform them about orders etc he will need to store the post code part of the address in a different field. Store details about the suppliers permanently The database will store details about the suppliers name and address. The suppliers table will be similar to the customer table. But the user will send letters to the suppliers concerning the orderinf of raw materials etc. Easily be able to input data concerning the ordering of materials. For example, style, material, size, colour etc. The user will easily be able to in put the data u sing Microsoft access instead of inputting the data on paper using a hand made table where he could be creating a more efficient table using access. Be able to print out order details for the worker to use. The user will be able to print out details of the customers orders. For example, the number of garments, style, material etc. Check his status with the suppliers. For example, material ordered etc. The user should be able to access details about what he has ordered and what there is to pay at the touch of button Send out letters to customers using mail merge for better efficiency. The user will be able to send out letters to the customers and suppliers quickly and efficiently using mail merge with Microsoft Access and Microsoft Word Print out an update of all deadlines to be met. The user will be able to print out a list of all deadlines to be met of all of the customers so the workers can work efficiently. Working Constraints End-user skill level The end-user(s) have used modern computers before based upon Windows 95. The user has used a modern computer to create letters and do calculations on Microsoft Excel. The user can only do simple calculations and nothing too complicated. The user can create letters for suppliers and customers by using a word processor. Mr Jordan is new to Microsoft Word but is getting the hang of it. He does not know much about the advanced features of the software. Mr Jordan will need some form of support in using the advanced features. Mr Jordan can use any simple software, but will have to apply himself slightly to be able to get the hang of the advanced features. His experience with IT is very limited. The new system must be easy to understand so that the vital functions can be successfully carried out. No errors should occur, everything should be clear. Availability of hardware and software The previous software that Mr Jordan was using is called Lotus Word Pro96 but has recently purchased a new PC with Microsoft Office 2000 on it. This new computer is manufactured by Compaq and has the following specification: 900Mhz processor 64Mb RAM 13Gigabytes HDD 17 inch VDU Cannon Bubble Jet printer BJC4200 Microsoft Office 2000 Mr Jordan has an ideal specification if not too good for the functional requirements. The software in the school will easily correspond with Mr Jordanââ¬â¢s PC since in school Microsoft Office 97 is available. Time constraints The deadline for the project is to be completed for the 30^th March. This gives approximately nine weeks for development, testing and documentation. Documentation will take up a great deal of the time this means that time will be a major co nstraint upon the completed system. Initial time plan Consideration of solutions Data such as company names and addressââ¬â¢s will need to be stored along with ordering details etc. this means that a database must be used. A word processor will also be needed because letters have to be created for the customers. Mail merge could be used. There are two choices for the type of database: relational or Flat-file. Flat-file A Flat-file database will not be suitable because it would mean that all of the field would have to be stored in one table. For example, supplier, customer and order fields will all be in the same table. This would then lead to there being data in the table that is not needed. For example, each time a customer made an order their name and address will have to be recorder in that record. If this type were to be used then it would take up a lot of space and hold useless data. It would also make it hard to search in the basic ways that you do. It will be hard to develop it so that the end-user will be ab le search for a certain supplier or customer without all of the other irrelevant details coming up. It would also make it increasingly difficult to use the mail merge facility. Concluding this we now know that a spreadsheet is not suitable for our purpose because it is just like a Flat-file if not nearly enough the same thing. Relational database This form of storage is much more flexible than Flat-file because it allows the data to be split up into separate tables. This is more efficient because each table contains information about a single entity. Now that information is in its individual tables, data redundancy is avoided. By linking all of the tables the whole structure will be able to be searched in a variety of ways. There are a great amount of relational database options in the market but the two main ones are Microsoft Access and Lotus Approach. These are both very suitable choices. Out of the two I will use Microsoft Access because it is more common compared with Lotus Approach and also because I am more familiar with the Microsoft environment. Overall I feel that Microsoft Access is easier to understand the instructions are clearer which makes it easier to follow. The terminology used in Access is better than that used in Lotus Approach. The form will be used to enter record of orders, suppliers and customers etc. This will make the business more organised and thus more efficient. The queries will be used to see who is ordering what and how much is owed to suppliers or owed by customers. To produce the templates for the letter I have chosen Microsoft word because it can easily be linked to Microsoft Access. It will also enable the letter to look professional as you can set any of your own preferences. For example, margin width, header and footer etc. Functions in Microsoft word such as MacroButtons, Date fields can make the end-user develop the letter template for his suitability. Other functions like AutoCorrect and AutoText will give the user an option for creating many types of customised letters for different kinds clients. My other options for word processors were Lotus WordPro, WordPad, Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft Paint and Word Perfe ct. These were not as suitable as Microsoft Word because some of them do not allow me carry out the advanced features that I wish to and also because most of them will not be able to link with Microsoft Access.

Niccollo Machiavelli the most influential theorist of political philosophy - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 10 Words: 2850 Downloads: 1 Date added: 2019/10/30 Category People Essay Level High school Tags: Niccolo Machiavelli Essay Did you like this example? Niccollo Machiavelli was one of the most influential theorists of political philosophy. He was known as an Italian diplomat, philosopher, historian, and politician of the Renaissance period (Rubio, 2016). However, his notoriety stems from being known as the father of modern political theory, and his theory inspired the term Machiavellian (Rubio, 2016). Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Niccollo Machiavelli the most influential theorist of political philosophy" essay for you Create order The world in which Niccollo Machiavelli lived, surprisingly enough, resembles modern-day society to some extent. Even though city states have been replaced with nation states, empires have permanently collapsed, and modern warfare is now unimaginably waged with weapons and tactics, there are still similarities that remain the same (Stratford, 2015). Although Machiavelli died hundreds of years ago, he would likely be able to expertly navigate the political sphere of today, as if it was his own, seeing as how the principles that prevail remain the same (Stratford, 2015). Even though some of his teachings justified and inspired tactics involving dishonesty, immorality, and murder, there are still many positive takeaways from his teachings that have impacted modern-day society. As a result, his theories have become a guide for contemporary policymakers of all types across the world. Machiavelli was born on May 3, 1469 in Florence, Tuscany during the Renaissance movement (Borghini, 2017). He was the son of a lawyer from a rather distinguished family, and he spent hours educating himself in his fathers library (Borghini, 2017). As a result, there is reason to believe that he was exceptionally educated. In 1498, he accepted a political career covering two governmental roles in Florence, Italy (Borghini, 2017). He was assigned with diplomatic missions to local European courts which required a sophisticated understanding of politics along with great diplomacy (Borghini, 2017). In 1509, he was responsible for establishing the Florentine militia and leading the troops to recapture the town of Pisa (Borghini, 2017). Machiavelli was indeed a Renaissance man successful in most endeavors, leaving a lasting mark on history as a writer of short stories, histories, and plays. In 1513, in he was imprisoned, tortured, and exiled. He later retired to his country house, where he began writing his famous works including a classic masterpiece that is still read today, The Prince (1513) (Borghini, 2017). According to Machiavelli, in order for an individual to maintain ones state and achieve great things, one must be powerful, bold, flexible, resolute, and be prepared to break promises against charity, truth, religion, and humanity (Machiavelli, 1810). One must have the cunning of a fox and the strength of a lion (Machiavelli, 1810). This also means that in order to be successful, one must be willing to act deviously, ruthlessly, violently, and cruelly when deemed necessary. In todays politics, actions are judged by their success, which means one will be praised regardless of their wrong so long as the end justifies the means (Ratner, 2018). This message seems cold and calculating; however, it is one that many politicians live by. Machiavelli believed that rulers and citizens should not shrink from setting aside every scruple if the survival of the republic is at stake (Ramsay, 2017). In other words, political success excuses any unjust, cruel, or disgraceful deed, regardless of how h arsh the consequences may be. Admittedly, this is a cold way of dealing with society, and even though it does in some places exist to this extent today, this generally leads citizens to strike back. Even though the mere utterance of Machiavellis name has become synonymous with treachery and deceit, one of his main concerns was security of the state as well as the welfare of its people (Demack, 2012). When taken in correct context, his theory of leadership has some common sense to it. In Chapter 21, for example, he explains what leaders must do in order to be esteemed (Demack, 2012). Roughly transposed to todays way of thinking one could say that presidents who attend the Olympics and CEOS acting as philanthropists are actually following his counsel. Machiavelli admired Borgia but in his book depicted his weaknesses using brutal honesty (Demack, 2012). He identified the unpleasant truths of human nature in a straightforward manner. (Demack, 2012). The most successful politicians of today seem to be the ones who have an edge to them, the ability to get step outside the normal parameters of niceties. Jimmy Carter was a good example of one who totally lacked this sort of ability. Donald Trump is quite the opposite in his tactics, speaking and acting brutally at times. President Carter was an ineffectual president in some ways due to his clutching so closely his values. We have yet to see what the outcome will be for President Trump. Thomas Cromwell, the mastermind behind the English reformation, was said to have specifically admired Machiavelli and Roman Emperor Charles V and Henry VII were both found owning copies of The Prince. (Stratford, 2015). His works ended up inspiring Henry VII to defy the Pope and seizing religious authority (History Channel: Machiavelli, 2018). Machiavelli was also cited as the murderous Machiavel according to Shakespeare (History Channel: Machiavelli, 2018). Philosopher Edmund Burkes believed the French Revolution bore evidence of the odious maxims of a Machiavellian policy (History Channel: Machiavelli, 2018). Later, during the 20th century, his works were blamed him for the rise of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin because a book was kept by their bedside, and they were known to have read the book before (History Channel: Machiavelli). Business leaders also use Machiavellis theories in their aspirations of getting. Others go as far as to call it the Mafia Bible for gangsters like John Gotti (History Channel: Machiavelli, 2018). There are those who question his work and propose that it is a warning of what could potentially happen if power is not checked. However, a majority of individuals are said to think of it as a blueprint for how to gain power and hold onto it. (History Channel: Machiavelli, 2018) Cesare Borgia in The Prince is Machiavellis example of a prince with great prowess; however, this young man was also known to be the enemy of the Renaissance period (Demack, 2012). He was the illegitimate son of Pope Alexander VI, who ravaged Northern Italy, seized towns, and murdered many of those who attempted to stand in his way. (Demack, 2012). This meant no one was safe and anyone was liable to be strangled, stabbed, or poisoned with impunity. Niccollo Machiavelli was a Florentine diplomat during this time, therefore, he spent four months in Borgias court, writing dispatches to his superiors which helped inspire The Prince (Demack, 2012). In The Prince, he uses Borgia as an example to explain the dangers of acquiring principality by virtue of another got to change these words (Demack, 2012). Since Borgia was given power by virtue of his father, he ruled Romagna with overall skill. However, once his father died, a rival to his family gained influence, and Cesare was overthrown (Demack, 2012). This event having occurred hundreds of years ago may seem like an isolated moment in history, but the abuse of power is not peculiar to Renaissance politics. This abuse can occur anywhere, any time, and with anyone. Along with the brutality of war and politics, it seems that principles espoused by Machiavelli apply to not just todays society but to various time periods leading up to this. The Prince was intended to be a royal advice book explaining in detail the virtues that a good prince should possess (Machiavelli, 1810). The Prince gives instruction as to how a leader gains power and stays in power. In this book, he described how to run a principality without regarding what is traditionally right or wrong (Littell). Even though he did gain power in Florence, when the leadership changed, he also lost his political influence. The Prince, however, has become known as one of the best examinations of politics and is studied by political thinkers to this very day. Francis Bacon, British statesman and philosopher, wrote that We are much beholden to Machiavelli and others, that write what men do, and not what they ought to do, meaning that he wrote about the reality of politics rather than the theory (Littell). Even though The Prince had many practical insights on human behavior, it is also known to display a very pessimistic view of human nature and condones unethical way s of manipulating others (Littell). The Prince also teaches the inner workings of power. In his book, he asserts the importance of properly judging ones relationship with people of power (Demack, 2012). Misjudging these types of relationships, he reasons, can only jeopardize ones career, health, and bank balance. Power is usually abused when both the perpetrator and the victim share dysfunctional beliefs concerning power (Demack, 2012). Oftentimes, there are those who abuse their power and those who become victims, both of which act out of fear (Demack, 2012). The victim fears humiliation and the perpetrator fear the loss of power. Thus, Machiavelli tells us that the key to effective leadership is ones self-acceptance and self-knowledge. This was portrayed when men in The Prince, like Cesare Borgia, were destroyed simply because they lacked self-knowledge (Demack, 2012). Machiavelli asserted that if Borgia had recognized his weaknesses, he could well have ended up being far more successful. Self-acceptance, according to Machiavelli, is important because once one accepts their imperfections, they lose their power and others cannot manipulate them (Demack, 2012). This then gives one the courage needed to speak the truth to power and accept imperfections in others. This means that self-knowledge and self-acceptance are indispensable regardless of leading or following (Demack, 2012). In this sense he expresses the importance of individuals taking responsibility for their relationship with power. Machiavelli states that an appreciation for human nature allows one to foresee problems, defuse dangerous situations, and make wiser decisions (Demack, 2012). Applied to todays politics, these characteristics are very important in traversing the political playing field. To be able to understand what drives others and to have the objectivity to assess situations are both vital skills if one is to be successful. Machiavelli is said to have broken from politics in pursuit of a unified public and private good life (Stratford, 2015). This gave one the notion that politicians can operate according to the demands of the state as an entity independent from civil society and its moral imperatives (Stratford, 2015). He believed that in private morality the means matter just as much if not more (Stratford, 2015). However, in public morality, the ends are fundamental under all circumstances (Stratford, 2015). This means a leader who shows off their own moral imperfections to the public is more virtuous. In other words, he believed that to show ones imperfections was not a liability but an asset. Again, if we look President Trump, he definitely uses this philosophy. To his credit, he has garnered an admiration for his brutal honesty. Those who truly support him do not waiver, and much of this is, indeed, due to his unapologetic nature of telling it like it is. Machiavelli was the first to argue persuasively rules that constitute a morality as legitimate as that of ones everyday lifestyle (Stratford, 2015). His persuasiveness of the case rests in its relation to the world rather than its philosophical expansiveness (Stratford, 2015). Machiavellis writing came to life and even shaped the way generations of political leaders, publics, and philosophers understand how politics work. It also shaped the way that statesmen and politicians practice politics. This means that his legacy requires one to look at what he wrote and refer it to the world it was written about because that world involved the beginnings of the modern state. The term Machiavellian is used to characterize politicians who are evil because of the behaviors he is known to justify himself in his famous book, The Prince which turned Aristotles theory of virtues upside down and shook the European conception of government at its foundations (Borghini, 2017). Toward the end of the Sixteenth Century, The Prince was suddenly translated in all major European languages (Borghini, 2017). The Prince had also been a new subject of heated disputes into the many courts of the Old Continent. Unfortunately for Machiavelli, his main ideas have been misinterpreted at times. This led to the term coined as Machiavellianism, which would refer exclusively to his type (Borghini, 2017). Today, the term indicates a person with a cynical attitude, who is justified to do anything if the end requires it so long as they are a politician (Borghini, 2017). Again, an example of how this philosophy has sustained. One does not need to have read his book to understand the mea ning of the word Machiavellian. Machiavellianism has also made its way to the business world. This term used in the setting of the workplace means the employment of deceptive behavior in a business setting (Greenberg, 2003). Machiavellianism has even been studied as a personality characteristic sharing features with manipulative leadership tactics (Greenberg, 2003). Recently, however it has been applied to the context of the workplace and other organizations in a different way. Machiavellism, psychopathy, and narcissism, have been identified as the dark triatic personality traits (Greenberg, 2003). The Machiavellian generally manipulates individuals in pursuit of achieving his or her goals. A newer model of Machiavellianism is based on maintaining power, manipulative behaviors, and harsh management tactics (Greenberg, 2003). Studies have shown there to be a positive correlation between Machiavellianism and workplace bullying. The groups of bullies and victims were said to have a higher Machiavellianism level compared to those who were uninvolved (Greenberg, 2003). Machiavellians are known to manipulate and exploit individuals to advance their own personal agendas and maintain power over all. The guiding principles of Machiavellianism include that one must never show humility, arrogance is more effective when interacting with others, ethics and morality are for weak individuals, powerful people have the right to deceive others when necessary, and it is much better to be feared than to be loved (Greenberg, 2003). This means these individuals oftentimes neglect to share important information, fail to meet their own obligations, find ways of making others in management look bad, and spread false rumors. Research has shown Machiavellianism to be positively associated with subordinate perceptions of abusive su pervision which includes workplace bullying (Greenberg, 2003). However, if one looks deeper, Machiavelli actually addresses this issue. Bullying seems to be the only strategy known for individuals who cant lead. These individuals are weak, which means one will only become a victim if they cower. In the end, neither stance brings true happiness and one must always remember to watch their backs. Machiavelli addresses the danger of this. For example, most of the Roman emperors in The Prince died tragically before their time (Demack, 2012). Everyone is given the opportunity to lead others at work, in politics, in the community, or within ones family. Once one becomes a leader, however, they will be challenged which also means if there are any self-doubts, they will become very evident to those around them. Despite ones many strengths, often trying to hide ones weaknesses will only lead to them becoming exposed. (Demack, 2012). Machiavelli encourages strength and does say that the ends justify the means, but he also addresses the virtues of cunning a nd prowess, the ability to be a statesman. Bullying on its face would not be something that he endorsed but would rather warn against as an excess and a weakness. Through Machiavellis teachings, a very basic yet difficult question for politicians arises: Is it better to be fear or loved? According to Machiavelli, one should wish to be both, but, because it is difficult to unite them in one person, is much safer to be feared than loved, when, of the two, either must be dispensed with (Machiavelli, 1810). This is because fear is easier to maintain for a ruler than love. Machiavelli believes that fear is the most reliable emotion that can be most easily controlled. One cannot rely on love because it is unstable. Fear, however, is constant and will remain true no matter what the circumstances are. Love creates a bond of obligation while fear encourages obedience. It is always difficult to rely on being loved because people can be ungrateful, fickle, false, cowardly, covetous, dissimulating, hungry for profit and quick to evade danger (Machiavelli, 1810). These are all very valid points that be interpreted the wrong way. Machiavelli never said it is better to be feared than loved, instead he only said it was safer (Machiavelli, 1810). This, again is another facet of his philosophy that has carried over to todays politics. Throughout the world, we have despots that reign with terror, not so many with compassion. This remains a question still pondered by todays politicians as they attempt to establish and maintain their position. Again, President Trump comes to mind as an example of this facet of Machiavellis theory. He admittedly uses fear as a political tactic to get what he wants. Again, we will have to wait to see if this proves to be an effective tool. Machiavelli changed the course of world history by his revolutionary philosophy. Perhaps it was really nothing new, but the fact that he defined his thoughts so clearly gave the politician a tool with which to traverse the political environment. This book has been translated in different languages and is still used today in other fields (i.e. business). Good or bad, Machiavelli changed the way the game of politic has played to this very day.

What Is a Floor Plan and Can You Build a House With It
A floor plan or house plan is a simple two-dimensional (2D) line drawing showing a structures walls and rooms as though seen from above. In a floor plan, what you see is the PLAN of the FLOOR. Its sometimes spelled floor-plan but never as one word; floorplan is a misspelling. Floor Plan Features A floor plan is very much like a map, with lengths and widths, sizes and scales of how far apart things are. Walls, doorways, and windows are usually drawn to scale, meaning proportions are somewhat accurate even if a scale designation (such as 1 inch1 foot) is not indicated. Built-in furniture and equipment like bathtubs, sinks, and closets are often showcased in floor plans of a house; Gustav Stickley and Frank Lloyd Wright drew built-in seating and bookcases in the inglenook. Key Words floor plan: 2D drawing shows exterior and interior walls, doors, and windows; detailing variesblueprint: detailed architectural drawing used as a construction document or builders guide (refers to an old printing method of white lines on blue paper)rendering: as used by an architect, an elevation drawing showing what a finished structure will look like from different perspectivesbumwad: onion skin tracing paper used by architects to draw initial floor plans; also called trash, trace, or scratch paper, it is as thin as toilet paper, but stronger; rolls of tracing paper come in yellow (easier to see through layers on a light table or light box) or white (easier to make electronic copies)schematic: an architects scheme of how to satisfy a clients needs; the initial design phase of an architects process includes floor plansdollhouse view: 3D floor plan seen from overhead, like looking into a doll house without a roof; easily produced from digital floor plans Evolution of Selection and Technology Howard Sokol / Getty Images Plans may begin on a cocktail napkin. Although usually drawn to scale, a floor plan can be a simple diagram showing the layout of the rooms. An architect may begin with schematic drawings on tracing paper, which is sometimes amusingly called bumwad. As the scheme evolves, more detail is added to the floor plan. A real advantage to working with an architect on a project is the expertise in design. Branislav / Getty Images Today, architects use digitized floor plans to sell their designs. Well before home computers, however, floor plans were often included in pattern books and developers catalogs in order to better sell the presented real estate. In the early 1900s, the American Foursquare was popular. This method of advertising and selling product was used in the 1950s and 1960s to market dreams of home ownership. If you have an older home, it may have been purchased in the early 20th century equivalent to online shopping, the mail order catalog. Companies such as Sears, Roebuck and Co.Ã and Montgomery Ward advertised free floor plans and instructions, so long as the supplies were bought from those companies. Browsing an index of selected floor plans from these catalogs would help you find your dream home. For newer homes, explore the internet for companies that offer stock plans. By looking at floor plans, you may find your home as a popular design. With simple floor plans, homeowners can conduct a type of architectural investigation. Westend61 / Getty Images Today, there are many easy-to-use tools to draw a digital floor plan. Sometimes people use these such tools to document historic architecture, like the Gothic Salisbury Cathedral in Wiltshire, England, built between 1220 and 1258. Drawing a Building From the Ground Up Sorry, but you cannot build a house with only a floor plan and a picture. When shopping for house plans or building plans, you may study the floor plans to see how space is arranged, especially the rooms and how traffic may flow. However, a floor plan is not a blueprint or a construction plan. Iit is not enough to build a house. While floor plans give the big picture of living spaces, they do not have enough information for builders to actually construct the home. Your builder will need complete blueprints, or construction-ready drawings, with technical information that you will not find on most floor plans. You need a complete set of construction plans that includes not only floor plans, but cross-section drawings, electrical and plumbing plans, elevation drawings or renderings, and many other types of diagrams, as well. On the other hand, if you provide your architect or professional home designer with a floor plan and a photo, he or she may be able to create construction-ready drawings for you. Your pro would need to make decisions about many details that are not ordinarily included on simple floor plans. For example, if your building site has expansive views in specific directions, an architect will take advantage of that aspect by suggesting certain window sizes and orientation. It is best to avoid a crazy-quilt plan, in which spaces are plopped down almost randomly with no overriding concept of how they fit together. Our brains need to find a reason why things are where they are. More often than not, this is a subconscious realization. A house designed with an understandable concept offers clarity and comfort.(Hirsch, 2008) Better yet, get your hands on some powerful DIY home designer software. You can experiment with design and simplify some of the difficult decisions and choices always involved in new projects. Sometimes you can export digital files in a comparable format to give your building professional a head start in completing the necessary blueprint specifications. The right software takes a simple floor plan and turns it into renderings, dollhouse views, and even virtual tours. The process of design is very enlightening, and playing with such software can be a lot of fun. Resources and Further Reading Hirsch, William J. Choosing An Online Survey And Collect Responses - 2453 Words
Instead of interviewing four people, I decided to make an online survey and collect responses because I was at home for Thanksgiving. As a result I got more responses, and I think people were more honest as well. I also allowed for the respondents to choose whether they have majority or minority status. I had nine responses, three identifying as minority status, five as majority status, and one student who was not sure, since he/she/they fell into multiple target groups but reported that she didnââ¬â¢t experience any discrimination. There were some interesting discrepancies, since one female student reported that she was a minority, and another reportedly felt she was in the majority. At RIT, the distribution of gender differs by program, so this could be a reason why this discrepancy exists. None of the students who identified themselves as having majority status reported experiencing any discrimination themselves, and neither did the one female student who identified as a minor ity but fell into no other target groups. One respondent, a self-identified conservative, Catholic white male chose to identify as a minority group. I thought this made sense since college campuses tend to be liberal, so conservatives are sometimes considered to be minorities. I thought about adding a checkbox for ideological minorities to my target group list when I first made my survey, but I was concerned that anyone might have a reason to check that box, since everyoneââ¬â¢s ideologies vary to someShow MoreRelatedFactors Influencing The International Students1338 Words à |à 6 Pageseducation. Method Issues in Business Ethics Research
Question: Discuss about the Method Issues in Business Ethics Research. Answer: Introduction Highly profits seeking multinational organizations are more likely to maximize their profit beyond their domestic boundaries. Organizations having businesses in overseas countries are expected to comply with some legal and ethical parameters for running successful business (Grant, Arjoon and McGhee 2017). The Government of home country expects some ethical compliance from the organizations, while they are operating in overseas countries. However, the intension of earning more and more profit and maximizing in hand cash, some of the global business organizations are not complying with ethical and moral principles. Though the organizations are complying with the legal obligations, but they are not exhibiting ethical compliance and moral business practice. Moreover, the most significant ethical dilemma can be measured in terms of tax avoidance measures by some tech giants in the world (Giacalone and Promislo 2013). Some of the most important theory of ethics highlights on ethical dilemm as of business. Kant theory highlights the right and wrong of business practice on fulfilling their basic duties. Apart from that, ethical egoism reflects on the fact that whether business is harming others for their own self-interest or not. The recent newspaper article posted on The Economic Times on 3rd May, 2017 highlights the ethical dilemma in the business practice of Apple. Moreover, this newspaper article has raised the ethical issues of Apple, which it is practicing in its overseas business. While conducting business in overseas marker, the global business organizations have some ethical responsibilities towards its home country. However, in this article, it is found that the cash stockpile of Apple has hit a staggering $256.8 billion (The Economic Times 2017). It has become a sparking debate on Apple regarding the massive cash reserves. In order to avoid the complex tax codes of USA, Apple is not bringing back its overseas profit in USA. It has ultimately generated its cash stockpile to almost $2.5 to $3 trillion (The Economic Times 2017). Apple is the topmost US multinational company, who has been accused for avoiding the tax in their home country and make huge cash pile. Chellet al. (2016) opined that Apple has 90% stockpiles outside of USA market for avoiding complex tax rate of USA. Moreover, the organization has left almost $1.2tnof their earnings in overseas market for skirting the tax chargein USA. On the other hand, Michaelsonet al. (2014) pointed out that the intension of maximizing the profit has made the organization unwilling to move its overseas profit back to its home country. However, this business practice of Apple is actually causing ethical dilemma in the organization. It is also causing the corporate social responsibilities issues in the business practice of Apple. As per the CSR norms, an organization is liable to pay proper taxes to the Government and maintain transparency with the Government regarding the business practice. However, in such extent, Apple is not fair enough to maintain transparency with the US government regarding their tax payment in home country. In this way, there are enough CRS issues in this organization, which has become the major concern of debates. Moreover, this practice has drawn the attention of US president Donald Trump. Moreover, with an intension to encourage the global organizations towards moving overseas earning in US, he has initiated some new tax strategy. These strategies can lower the tax rate for repatriated earning of multinational companies on moving their profits back in US. As per, (Titcomb 2017) the president has initiated slashing business tax and one-time tax holiday for reducing tax rate of repatriated income. While asking to the Apple board, it has been known that the organization is still waitin g for another tax holiday for bringing their overseas money back to USA. While the cash and securities are piling up in overseas countries, Apple is piling up its debts in the United State. Giacalone and Promislo(2013) pointed out that Apple recently sits in about $53.2 billion long-term debt obligations. On the other hand, Grant, Arjoon and McGhee(2017) stated that Apple also huge non-current liabilities. Moreover, the organization is facing pressure on returning more cash to the shareholders with higher dividends and more share buybacks. Moreover, these debts are not included in the cash of Apple, which it has promised to the shareholders. In this way, the organization is also being incapable of providing fair return on investment in its US market. This practice of Apple is also indicating unethical dilemma in this business practice in home country. As per the stakeholder ethics, the organization should provide fair return on investment to the shareholders. However, in this case, Apple is not able to provide fair return on investment to the shareholders . It is actually causing ethical issues of the organization towards dealing with its US shareholders. With an intension to maximize profit and avoid huge tax rate, Apple is reserving much of its money in low tax countries. As per Beets, Lewis and Brower(2016), much of the funds of Apple are hold by its Irish subsidiaries. However, they have actually invested US assets. On the other hand, BBC News(2017) the US Government has held hearing on the unethical business practice of Apple for not paying the tax on its operations outside of the home country. However, the CEO of Apple has defended this organizational practice. The CEO has strenuously asserted that the organization pays the tax bills for all of its domestic operation. However, in case of foreign operation, the organization exploits the avoidance provision of Irish Tax law like many other companies. However, this organizational practice actually goes beyond the legal boundaries and creates ethical dilemma for the organization. Apple has become able to create corporations, which pay no income tax to any taxing nation. In order to reduce the tax burden for repatriated income, the organization has reserved much of its earning in Irish subsidiaries. According to Ethicalconsumer.org(2017), Ireland never assess the income tax on the entities, which are managed and operated from outside of the country. In such extent, Apple mostly invests asserts from US. Apple Operations International has no physical presence and no employees in Ireland. Moreover, the Ireland subsidiaries are completely operated and managed from the United State. In this way, the Irish Government cannot impose much tax on the business of Apple. Therefore, in Irish subsidiaries, Apple can utilize the tax avoidance provision and reserve more earnings by enhancing business profits. On the other hand, Campbell and Cowton(2015) opined that the United State assess the tax based on the subsidiary of incorporation only within the country. Therefore, it can be said that US uses complex tax codes for the multinational organizations. Furthermore, this complex tax codes actually leading the multinational companies like Apple to unethically avoid the US taxes and reserve more money in overseas subsidiaries of the organization. As per Beets, Lewis and Brower(2016), the business practice of Apple cannot be alleged with any legal claims, but it is highly associated with ethical dilemmas. The organization is not transparent enough with the Government of its home country. Moreover, the organization is only seeking increasing profit even by sacrificing the intension of ethical business practice. On the other hand,West(2014) opined that Apple is also incapable of meeting its stakeholder interest to a full extent. Moreover, the organization has already increased its debt and become incapable of providing fair return on investment to the important shareholders in US market. It is actually highlighting the ethical issues of the organization. As per Kantian theory, the right and wrongness of an action does not depend on its consequence, but on its motives towards fulfilling its duty. This theory is based on the view that intrinsically good things have good will. According to Chellet al. (2016), an action can be good enough, its maxim or principle is backed by moral law. Moreover, one should always obey the categorical imperatives, regardless of his/her desire or interest. On the other hand, Campbell and Cowton(2015) opined that morality must be based on categorical imperatives. These imperatives actually command a person to behave in moral way. While assessing the business practice of Apple, it has been found that the organization is not moving its overseas earnings to US. However, the intension behind this action of Apple is not good enough regardless of its consequences on the US market. The actual motive of the organization behind this action is to maximize organizational profit (Ethicalconsumer.org 2017). Moreover, they are actually avoiding the complex rate of US market. In this way, this practice of tax avoidance is actually reflecting an unethical business practice. Moreover, the categorical imperatives of the organization are not closely associated with morality, which is resulting in an unethical behavior in the business practice. Ethical Egoism is an ethical theory which is imposed on an individual or organization. According to West (2014), an organization should adhere to some standards of business practice, while doing any business. It should ensure that the any practice of the organization does not harm any individual. On the other hand, Michaelsonet al. (2014) opined that an organization should always avoid such actions or omissions, which can cause harm to others. Moreover, the breaching of standard can cause ethical dilemma in an organization, which can even lead to ethical issue.Furthermore, an organization should act responsibly in a given set of circumstances or otherwise, it can lead to ethical dilemma. While measuring the business practice of Apple, it can be seen that the cash stockpile of the organization is staggering. However, the organization has increased the long-term debts in the US market. In this way, it can be assumed that the organization is not maintaining transparent relationship with the US shareholders. Despite of having huge organizational profit, the organization has increased its long-term debts. Moreover, it is not providing fair return on investment to its US shareholders (Titcomb 2017). Therefore, it can be said that the business practice of Apple is actually harming the shareholders, which can lead to law of negligence and ethical issue. Ethical egoism is a normative ethical positioning, which a moral agent ought to do with his self-interests. According to Giacalone and Promislo(2013), moral agents always have their obligations and interest towards helping others. Moreover, they always scarify their own interest for the sake of fulfilling others interests. On the other hand, Michaelsonet al. (2014) opined that the interests of moral agents are substantially equivalent to the interests and well-beings of others. Moral and ethical deliberations are occurred, when moral agents harm the interests and well-beings of others. While assessing the cash stockpiling news of Apple, it can be seen that the organization has reserved 90% of overseas earnings in overseas markets (The Economic Times 2017). Moreover, the organization is not moving their overseas earnings back in US market. Moreover, the organization is not investing in the economy of the USA. In this way, the organization is not actually contributing the economic development of USA (BBC News 2017). Most of the money is invested in the foreign countries and developing the economy of those countries. In this way, the organization is harming the interest and well-being of its home country USA. Moreover, the cash stockpiling of the organization is actually causing ethical dilemma by harming the USA economy. Conclusion In conclusion, it can be said the cash stockpiling of Apple is staggering by avoiding the taxes in USA for its repatriated income. The organization is not willing to move its repatriated income back to its home country USA. The intension behind this practice is to avoid the complex tax code of USA. In this way, the tax avoidance practice of Apple is actually causing ethical dilemma in its business practice. Moreover, the organization is also not contributing properly in the development of US economy. Furthermore, most of the repatriated income of the organization is reserved in the Irish subsidiaries for getting tax avoidance provision. Donald Trump is encouraging the multinational organization to moving their overseas earnings back to US by cutting the tax rate. Development Through Life Stages free essay sample
Life begins with conception. A woman normally produces one egg cell each month, roughly two weeks after the last menstrual period. This egg can then be fertilized if sexual intercourse takes place while the egg is in the fallopian tube. Fertilization means that the genetic material in the sperm joins with the genetic material in the egg to start new life. Pregnancy Pregnancy is the period from conception to birth when a woman carries a developing foetus in her uterus. Pregnancy begins when a sperm penetrates an egg. One to one and a half days later, the single fertilized cell begins to divide, after two or three days there are enough cells to make the fertilised egg the size of a pin head. The collection of cells travels to the lining of the uterus where it becomes implanted. At this stage the collection of cells is called an embryo. After eight weeks, the embryo may have grown to between three and four centimetres, has a recognizable heart bear ad the beginnings of eyes, ears, a mouth, legs and arms. At this stage the growing organism is called a foetus. During the final seven months before birth, all the organs continue to develop. By twenty weeks, the foetus will have reached about the half the length of the baby at birth, by thirty two weeks, the foetus will be about half its birth weight. Birth and Infancy Usually about nine months after conception the baby will be born. The new born babe has to take easily digestible food such as mothers milk in the first weeks in order to grow. A new born baby does not have a fully developed brain but can usually hear sounds, tell differences in the way things taste, identify the smell of their own mother or carer. Infants are born with various temporary and primitive reflexes such as: turning their head towards any touch on the cheek. This helps the baby get the nipple into their mouth to feed, if you place your finger in the palm of the babys hand, they will grasp your finger tightly, this is called the grasp reflex, if a baby is startled they will throw their hands and arms outwards, arching the back and straightening their legs, this is called the startle reflex, if a new born baby is help upright with their feet touching the ground, they will begin to make movements as if trying to walk, this reflex is called the walking reflex. Babies are helpless when it comes to muscle co-ordination and control. Babies cant hold up their head, roll over, sit up, or use their hands to move objects deliberately. Despite their muscular inability, babies have the ability to recognise and interact with people. Babies prefer the sound of human voices to other sounds and soon learn to recognise their mothers voice. Babies are born with the natural ability to sense objects. The sensorimotor stage is a stage when thinking is limited to sensing objects and performing motor actions. Jean Piaget, a Swiss development psychologist believed that a baby would not have a working system for remembering and thinking about the world until babies reach about 18 months old. At around 3 months infants begin to make babbling noises as they learn to control the muscles associated with speech and around 12 months infants begin to imitate sounds made by carers such as ââ¬Ëda-daââ¬â¢; this develops into the use of single words. At around 2 years infants begin to make two-word statements such as cat goed (using the wrong tense) and the infant begins to build their vocabulary. At around 3 years children begin to make simple sentences such as I want a drink This develops the ability to ask questions but use of the wrong tense still occurs. At around 4 years children begin to use clear sentences that can be understood by strangers. Children can still be expected to make mistakes with their grammar. At 5 years children can speak using full adult grammar. Vocabulary will continue to develop through their whole lives. Social Development for newborn and infants occurs while interacting with carers because they seem to have an in-built tendency to interact with carers. By 2 months they may start smile at human faces, at 3 months infants will respond when adults talk, at five months infants can distinguish between familiar and unfamiliar people. Infants make their first relationships as they form an emotional attachment to carers. In the later stages of infancy, infants will play alongside other children. Bowlby (1953) argued that infants have an in-built need to form an attachment with a carer. The quality of this attachment may affect emotional development for the rest of the childââ¬â¢s life. Childhood During this stage children grow steadily but extremely rapidly during infancy. By the age of six, a childs head will be ninety per cent of adult, even though the body still has a lot of growing to do. Reproductive organs remain small until the onset of puberty. Childrens practical abilities continue: at the age of two, children may be able to run and climb stairs one step at a time, by age four children may be able to kick and throw objects, by age six or seven, a child may be able to skip and ride a bicycle. The pre-operational stage ( pre-logic ages 2-7) is a stage that Piagit believed that children could no think in a logical way. Piagit explained that pre-operational children connot properly understad how ideas like numbers, mass and volume really work. A child might be able to count to 10 but might not understand what the number 10 really mean. For example if there are two, two litre bottes (and the child wasnt aware of both the bottles containing 2 litres) of water and one of the bottles is longer in length and thin by width and the other is short in length and big in width then a child in this stage might say the two litre bottle longer in length is longer because it is simply longer or taller. The concrete operational stage (7-11 years) can think logically provided the issues at hand are simple logical puzzles. For example if you ask a seven year old a question such as Bill is taller then Bob, but Georgia is smaller than Samantha so who is the tallest? they may find it difficicult to mentaiily imagine the information given to them, this is called abstract logical thinking but if the seven year old was given a picture of Bill, Bob, Georgia and Samantha then they would point out quickly who is the tallest, this type of thinking is called concrete logical thinking. Young children are emotionally attached and dependent on the adults that care for them. Children begin to learn social roles and behaviour within their family. This is called first or primary socialisation. A family environment would provide a safe environment which children can explore social relationships with other children such as co-operative play. As childs age increases, the amount of independence coincides. Children also build relationships built on a sense of mutual trust. Friendships become more important as children grow towards adolescence. Even before children reach adolesence they may start to form a circle of friends that share common interests and agree with each other. Children use their imagination to begin to understand the social roles that other people play. Children begin to imagine an idea of themselves or a me. Relationships between family members may influence a childs amount of self-worth. The way way that a child gets on with teachers and friends may influence their self-confidence. These factors can ultimately develop a childs permanent sense of confidence and high amount of self worth or a sense of failure and inferiority. Vocabulary will continue to develop through their lives, this is of course unless their mental capacity deteriorates as they reach the end of their lives.
